Fiberklaar, the joint venture between Belgian full-service telecoms operator Proximus and Sweden’s EQT Infrastructure, has officially begun construction of its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network in the municipality of Geel. The company held a groundbreaking ceremony with local officials on 20 September to kick off deployment of the 149km network which will pass 11,870 premises. The company expects to begin connecting customers in the first quarter of 2022 and complete the build in Q1 2023.
Geel will be the first city covered by Fiberklaar as part of a EUR2.5 billion (USD2.94 billion) investment in an open fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) network in the Flanders region which aims to connect 1.5 million homes and businesses to fibre by 2028.
