Telenor Hungary – a subsidiary of PPF Telecom Group – announced on its website that it will launch a home broadband internet service under the ‘OtthonNet’ banner on 14 September, delivered via its mobile network. OtthonNet offers unlimited monthly data traffic volume, estimated maximum download speed of ‘up to 150Mbps’ and multiple simultaneous device usage over a home Wi-Fi network, with a choice of two types of desktop routers. The service will be available to more than one million households at launch, a footprint which the company indicates is in the process of being expanded, whilst it expects that a ‘significant’ number of customers will subscribe to OtthonNet as an alternative to fixed broadband services.
Telenor Hungary CEO Peter Gazik disclosed: ‘The introduction of additional home services is also part of our long-term plans, and as a first step we will launch Telenor OtthonNet. The network modernisation process that made it possible to launch the service will also allow new products to emerge in the future. Thanks to the development of technology, it has become possible to provide services on a mobile network that were previously typically only available on fixed technology.’
The cellco’s entry to the residential fixed internet segment follows its launch of fixed internet access for medium and large enterprise customers with the ‘Telenor Hiperline’ leased line/IP-VPN range in November 2020, featuring last-mile connectivity via either copper, fibre-optic or dedicated wireless connections alongside corporate Mobile PBX services.
