A1 launches Croatia’s second 5G network

A1 Croatia has launched its 5G offering after winning a holding of 5G-ready spectrum at auction last week.

The operator will deliver services using 700MHz and 3.5GHz spectrum, and noted that the low-latency network would be capable of delivering gigabit download speeds.

A1’s 5G network is the second to launch in Croatia, with Hrvatski Telekom (HT) commencing its 5G offering in October last year. The operator obtained new 3.5GHz spectrum in the recent auctions, and is operating nearly 150 base stations in this band across 12 cities.

TeleGeography notes that HT has deployed 600 5G base stations, delivering services across an area with a population of two million. A1 meanwhile has deployed services in the capital of Zagreb plus a further 20 regional centres. It expects to achieve 90% population coverage by 2027.

Third-placed operator Telemach also obtained spectrum in the auction, and has revealed a EUR130 million (USD153 million) investment plan to build out its 5G network.
