SpeedChecker: How Algeria plans to improve download speeds

SpeedChecker, the mobile crowdsourcing company released a new report on the performance of mobile networks in Algeria. This report is part of an ongoing commitment from SpeedChecker to benchmark true user experience. The SpeedChecker report has been compiled using data from 260,898 unique mobile devices performing 430,861 tests in three weeks in May 2021.

While Algeria continues to suffer with one of the slowest download speeds in Africa steps are being taken to improve them:

  • Telecoms Minister will concentrate on improving 4G and not be distracted by 5G
  • ARPCE has issued extra spectrum to the top 3 providers to tackle slow speeds
  • ARPCE have also issued fines to the operators for poor 4G coverage
  • Looking further ahead: both Ooredoo and Mobilis have made commitments to provide 5G

On another positive note: Algeria has the cheapest mobile data in North Africa.

Ooredoo produced the best results overall except for in southwest Algeria where both Djezzy and Mobilis performed better. High latency across the country adds to the poor responsiveness experienced in Algeria with all providers suffering the same. Cheap mobile data helps to improve the User Experience and it will be interesting to see how quickly this can be improved.
