Within the first half of 2021, Cambodia’s Smart Axiata has deployed over 300 new base stations to extend its 4G coverage across nine provinces.
TeleGeography reports that the mobile provider has deployed 78 new sites in Siem Riep province, 39 in Battambang, 37 in Kampong Cham, 33 in Tboung Khmum, 25 in Prey Veng, 24 in both Banteay Meanchey and Kampong Thom, 23 in Svay Rieng, 17 in Kampong Speu, and nine in Kratie.
Smart Axiata is expanding its coverage as part of an overarching US$90 million investment into its infrastructure, with CEO Thomas Hundt saying: “Our emphasis on investments into the infrastructure that keeps Cambodia connected is more critical than ever as all of us rely on connectivity to work, study and stay in touch with friends and family.”
Hundt added that newer technologies were on the horizon for Smart, saying: “While maintaining full speed investments into the 4G network, a lot more new base station sites planned for deployment in the coming months, we can’t await to finally bring 5G to Cambodia too.”
