Claro Chile to boost 3.5GHz holding with Entel’s spare spectrum

Claro Chile has signed a US$10.75 million deal to acquire a 2×15MHz holding of 3.5GHz spectrum from rival operator Entel.

After obtaining 5G concessions at auction earlier this year, Entel’s 130MHz holding in the 3.5GHz range exceeded the set limit of 105MHz, meaning that it was obliged either to return its spectrum to regulator Subtel or sell it to a rival operator.

Claro meanwhile did not obtain any new 3.5GHz spectrum during the bidding, and has been seeking to increase its holding as it looks to expand its 5G offering. If Subtel approves the deal, Claro will receive spectrum in the 3425MHz-3440MHz/3525MHz-3540MHz.

The validity period of 30 years will remain intact, with the acquired concessions still set to expire on 12th December 2031. However, TeleGeography notes that the usage terms of the permits are currently restricted to fixed-wireless services. Since Claro intends to use it for mobility services, it will need Subtel to amend the terms.
