XL Axiata inks deal with FiberStar to drive fiber expansion

As part of efforts to expand the reach of its XL HOME fiber-optic network, Indonesian fixed and mobile operator XL Axiata has announced it is working with fiber provider FiberStar to target a number of new cities, including some outside Java.

Indotelko cites XL director and chief commercial officer, Abhijit Navalekar, as explaining how the tie-up will accelerate its fibre rollout. ‘With the support from FiberStar, we hope to immediately realise the provision of XL HOME networks in a number of cities that are target markets, including outside Java. In addition, we are also optimistic that we will be able to increase the number of home-passed to as many as 650,000 by the end of 2021, so that it can encourage an increase in sales of up to 30%,’ he said.

The official went on to note that demand for fibre services is accelerating – fuelled by the need to work from home during the pandemic – and to meet this, in the past twelve months XL has doubled the number of homes passed to 540,000 in the Greater Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Denpasar, Makassar, Balikpapan, Banjarmasin and Banjarbaru areas, as well as in Medan, Palembang, Bandung, Cirebon, Surabaya, Gresik and Sidoarjo.
