Cape Verde aims to free up digital dividend spectrum by July

Cape Verde is on track to clear its “digital dividend” spectrum by the end of June.

The spectrum is being vacated as Cape Verde completes its digital terrestrial TV (DTT) switchover, a process currently underway in several African countries including Nigeria and South Africa.

TeleGeography reports that Cape Verde’s national analogue-to-DTT migration programme began in August 2020, on the archipelago’s largest and most populous island of Santiago. By Q4 2020, 95% of the country’s population had access to DTT.

The final island to see its analogue TV shut down is the westernmost, Santo Antão. Culture & Creative Industries Minister Abraão Vicente told local outlet Inforpress that the island’s switch-off was scheduled for May 2021 but this has been delayed slightly due to the pandemic.
