Iran to auction 3.5GHz spectrum for 5G

The Iranian government is finalizing plans for an auction of the 3.5GHz spectrum to support 5G cellular services.

A report from PressTV cites Nastaran Mohseni, deputy head of Iran’s Communication Regulatory Authority (CRA), as saying that the allocation will go ahead despite problems acquiring equipment in the 3.5GHz band due to US trade sanctions.

Meanwhile, Morteza Taheribakhsh, the head of technical and network development at the country’s largest cellco, Mobile Communication Company of Iran (MCI), has warned that the sale should ensure that frequencies can be shared between operators, to avoid the creation of a monopoly. MCI has previously stated that it hopes to launch commercial 5G services by March this year.
