Tet expands fiber network

The Latvian incumbent Tet has invested €4 million in the development of its fibre network this year.

In a statement, the company says that for years Latvia has had some of the largest fibre optic coverage in Europe and it provides the fastest and most stable internet to almost 530,000 households, or almost two-thirds of the country’s total. This year it increased its fibre coverage by 5,400 households, or almost 15 a day. All told, Tet’s fibre network spans almost 13,400 km.

Tet also increased the capacity of the international internet network this year, including to Sweden and the Baltic States, thus improving the overall performance and quality of the internet core network, as well as investing in network protection solutions, the importance of which is growing every year.
These solutions are also a step towards the construction of a 5G core network, as in the future every 5G internet tower will be connected to fibre- optic internet.

Commenting on the development, Uldis Tatarcuk, chairman of the board at Tet, said: “The total amount of data transmission is increasing every year. Last year, internet consumption in the Latvian network grew by 8%, this year by 13%. We are aware that the core network of Tet internet is the backbone of Latvia’s common network, therefore investments in its improvement do not stop for a moment, and thanks to that Latvia is among the European leaders in both the availability and use of optical internet”.
