Nigeria implements new SIM registration rules

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced that all mobile subscribers in the country will be required to provide their service provider with a valid National Identification Number (NIN) between 16 December and the end of 30 December 2020, in order to update their SIM registration records.

The decision follows a directive issued last week suspending the registration of new SIM cards by mobile network operators (MNOs) while the NCC embarks on an audit of the Subscriber Registration Database.

Soon after, a meeting was held between the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, the NCC, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and representatives from all service providers in the industry, during which it was agreed that operators would immediately require all their subscribers to provider their NIN. After the deadline, all SIMs without NINs will be blocked from the networks, and any violations of the directive will be met by sanctions, including the potential withdrawal of an operator’s licence.
