Telecel launches LTE-A

Telecel Faso, Burkina Faso’s third largest mobile network operator (MNO) by subscribers, has announced the launch of ‘4G+’ LTE-A mobile services capable of supporting maximum download/upload speeds of 100Mbps/20Mbps. According to the company the network is available in 14 locations, namely: Beregadougou, Banfora, Bobo-Dioulasso, Hounde, Kaya, Kokologho, Kombissiri, Koubri, Koudougou, Loumbila, Manga, Ouagadougou, Saaba, Tanghin-Dassouri, Tenkodogo and Ziniare.

Speaking at the launch event, Telecel Faso CEO Dimitri Ouedraogo commented: ‘The company has taken the time necessary to build a network that is robust, secure and extremely reliable to offer the best possible experience of very high-speed broadband to the population. In terms of connectivity, in terms of cost, we’re going to make a difference.’ Rival MNOs Orange and the Office National des Telecommunications (Onatel) launched their own LTE-A services in January and March 2019, respectively.

During the launch ceremony, the Minister of Development of the Digital Economy and Posts, Hadja Ouattara, stated that this occasion marks the end of the ‘process of awarding technology-neutral licences to operators for 15 years; a process that began at the end of 2017’.
