Russian satellite operator RTComm, a subsidiary of Rostelecom, has provided the operator Megafon with additional satellite links of up to 500 Mbps capacity. The links will be used in the project Accessible Internet developed by the Chukotka regional government and operators.
More than 80 percent of residents of the region are able to use mobile services from Megafon, and 70 percent of the population is covered with its LTE network.
The Russian Ministry of Communications and the regional government earlier concluded agreements on subsidies for internet services with operators Rostelecom, Beeline, Megafon, as well as with local ISP Satis-M. This measure is temporary and will continue during the period of construction of sub-sea backbone networks from Kamchatka to Chukotka. Roll-out is expected to complete in 2022. Internet services are currently provided over satellite links in Chukotka.
