Telia Lietuva launches trial 5G network

Telia Lietuva has launched a trial 5G mobile network, after securing temporary frequency authorisation from the Communications Regulatory Authority of Lithuania (CRA) to test the technology.

According to a press release, the operator has eleven base transceiver stations (BTS) operating in the city centres of Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipeda, with two additional 5G stations to be launched in the Klaipeda Free Economic Zone (FEZ) in early December. Telia Lietuva CEO Dan Stromberg said: ‘In 2018, we were one of the first ones in Europe to test 5G technology in live network in Vilnius.

Today, 5G connection is taking the second step in Lithuania – we are launching 13 base stations, which will allow people and companies to evaluate the key advantages of 5G, and the impressive speed of mobile internet first of all, for themselves at no extra cost.’ The trial network could achieve real down/upload speeds of 1.9Gbps/200Mbps, with latency of ten milliseconds. Telia is planning to commence the provision of commercial 5G services in Lithuania after the CRA’s 5G frequency auction, which is expected to take place in 2021.
