Vietnamese company Vingroup secured a contract to manufacture two million 4G smartphones for an undisclosed US operator, a showing of overseas market expansion for the company.
Nikkei Asian Review reported the company is on an overseas expansion plan, and the contract is under an OEM deal for an anonymous operator, Bloomberg reported the company was US operator AT&T.
“This is an important step to supplying our own products to the US market," said Le Thi Thu Thuy, CEO of Vingroup smartphone manufacturing arm VinSmart. The company recently announced plans to manufacture and sell 5G smartphones in Vietnam, with the ambition to ship them in the US next year.
Vingroup began producing smartphones in 2018 with a plant in Hanoi which is capable of producing 125 million units per year. Phones from the company are sold also sold in Russia, Myanmar and Spain, reported Nikkei Asian Review.
According to Canalys VinSmart has an 11 per cent market share in the Vietnamese smartphone sector in the April-June quarter, ranking fourth behind Samsung, Oppo and Vivo.
