Tunisia predicts 5G launch in 2022

Tunisia tipped 2022 to be the year the country launches commercial 5G services.

Mohamed Fadhel Kraiem, the minister of communication technologies and digital Economy, said “the launch of 5G services is only possible from 2022” in Tunisia, Agence Ecofin reported.

Kraiem based the estimation on a study from Tunisia’s National Telecommunications Authority, and after specifications are unveiled by the body in 2021, 5G pilots will be conducted by the country’s three operators Tunisie Telecom, Ooredoo and Orange

Agence Ecofin noted multiple African countries accelerated their digital development to enter the fourth industrial revolution, with the Covid-19 pandemic revealing many vulnerabilities to their business.

According to research firm BuddeComm, Tunisia is in the top three African nations to have a mature telecoms market, only behind Ghana and Mauritius.

BuddeCom also noted Tunisia has high penetration for mobile and internet services, with plans to broaden connectivity further by launching nanosatellites in 2023.
