Luxembourg mobile network operator (MNO) Tango has announced plans to launch 5G services for all of its customers on 23 October 2020. The 5G network will initially be available in Luxembourg City before being deployed in other larger towns in the south from early 2021. All customers will be able to benefit from the new 5G network, and its speeds of up to 1Gbps, as part of their current mobile subscription. The launch will be accompanied by the introduction of Apple’s iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro, with other devices set to follow.
Tango’s Belgian parent company Proximus successfully bid for management rights to frequencies in the 700MHz and 3600MHz bands in July’s 5G spectrum auction. Under the terms of the 15-year spectrum licences, operators are required to deploy 5G services in Luxembourg before the end of 2020. As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, rival MNO Post Luxembourg announced plans last week to activate the country’s first 5G network in Luxembourg City on 16 October.
