Telstra claims 5G network now covers 41% of the population

Australian mobile network operator (MNO) Telstra has announced another 5G coverage milestone, revealing that with over 2,000 live sites, more than 41% of the population are now within its network footprint.

As previously reported by CommsUpdate, just last month the cellco confirmed it had around 1,500 5G-capable sites in operation across ‘selected areas of 53 … cities and towns’. According to the latest information from the MNO, having recently celebrated the switch-on of its 2,000th live site in Airlie Beach in Queensland’s Whitsundays, it now offers 5G connectivity in more than 60 towns and cities. Further, the cellco claims that there are now more than 1,400 suburbs across the country which have better than 50% 5G coverage.

Of note, the cellco highlighted its work outside of urban centres, saying that since the middle of this year it has extended coverage to a dozen regional areas, including: Nowra, Medowie, Corowa, Cowra, Orange and Malua Bay in New South Wales; Paynesville, Wangaratta, Bairnsdale and Corryong in Victoria; Sunshine Coast in Queensland; Berri and Port Elliott in South Australia; and Esperance in Western Australia.
