Mobile subscription in Bangladesh bouncing back from initial COVID-19 shock

The total number of Bangladesh's mobile phone subscribers hit over 166 million at the end of August, with the addition of nearly half a million new users in the first 8 months of the year, statistics of the country's telecom regulator showed recently.

According to data from the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), the number of subscribers in the country reached 166.028 million in August 2020.

Bangladesh currently has four mobile companies, three of which are foreign-backed cellphone operators.

The number of subscribers of mobile operators, Grameenphone, Robi Axiata, Banglalink and Teletalk stood at 77.011 million, 49.784 million, 34.578 million and 4.655 million respectively at the end of August, the BTRC data showed.

According to statistics of the country's telecom regulator, the number of Bangladesh's mobile phone subscribers stood at 165.572 million at the end of December 2019.

BTRC's Senior Assistant Director Md. Zakir Hossain Khan told Xinhua earlier that the operators reported loss of millions of subscriptions in March to May as the virus spread widely during that period in the country.

He attributed the decline in subscriber numbers in those past months to people with multiple phone numbers canceling some service during the outbreak.

Mobile phone subscribers in Bangladesh declined to nearly 161.506 million by the end of May -- down over 4.5 million from February, the BTRC data showed. Enditem
