South Korea boasts 1 million digital driver’s license app users, plans to expand digital ID use

Over 1 million South Koreans have downloaded the digital driver’s license app, the Korea Herald reports, citing information released by telecommunications companies in the country.

In June, digital driver’s licenses were introduced on the national identity authentication app PASS, adopted by over 30 million people for mobile transactions.

The app was developed following a partnership between SK Telecom, KT, LG U+ and the Korean National Police Agency. The license is used as ID at local stores and to confirm driving qualifications, with plans to broaden coverage and adoption.

Mobile carriers are negotiating with law enforcement to expand use in policing, as well as working with the business sector to make the app functional in sectors such as car sharing and rental. Future plans also include using the app for financial transaction authentication and improving security through 5G, AI and blockchain technology.

South Korea has recently added biometric authentication rules for mobile transaction security, while Jeju International Airport will roll out palm biometric authentication to support the One ID initiative for seamless and contactless airport identification checks and processes.
