Telecom Namibia has announced the recent extension of its 3G and 4G mobile services to both urban and rural areas across the country – and there’s much more to come.
According to local press reports, the extension involved the upgrade of 63 sites and the installation of ten new base stations in various parts of the country between December 2019 and April 2020.
Namibia Economist magazine says that 43 sites have been upgraded in the capital Windhoek from LTE to LTE-A, while new 4G or LTE-A sites have been installed in a large number of other areas across the country to help with the provision of mobile voice and data services to customers.
The operator has explained that the company is reviewing its network architecture to optimise its performance and mitigate against network strain as more customers continue to use its services.
However, it’s not all 4G and LTE. As a reminder of the continuing importance of 3G in Namibia, mobile base station equipment serving a number of areas has been upgraded from 2G to 3G.
As for the future, there’s much more planned, notably expansion to parts of the country where access to ICT services is limited. More LTE-A sites are under construction now for operation this month, and there are plans to commission another 34 LTE sites across the country over the next three months.
