Taiwan Star Telecom has said it plans to launch its commercial 5G services in August, having already secured approval for building 5G base stations from the National Communications Commission (NCC).
Teaming up with Nokia, the company said its initial 5G infrastructure will be based on non-standalone (NSA) networks enhanced by DSS (dynamic spectrum sharing) technology to optimize the 2600MHz band available to the firm.
The company said its initial 5G network deployments aim to cover 140 commercial districts and retail zones by 2020, with coverage in Taiwan's six major metropolitan areas to reach 50% by the end of this year and 80% in the next 12 months.
To ramp up the number of its 5G subscribers, Taiwan Star plans to offer a 5G tariff rate for unlimited data at about half of those offered by local rivals, according to company president Cliff Lai.
