Virgin Media makes gigabit speeds available in Edinburgh and Liverpool

British broadband provider Virgin Media has extended the availability of its gigabit speed service to two additional cities, those being Edinburgh and Liverpool. In a press release outlining the development the telco said the broadening of coverage for its fastest speeds was part of plans to bring gigabit connectivity to ‘more than 15 million homes across its entire network by the end of 2021’.

With Virgin having launched in ‘Gig1’ service in October 2019 in the city of Southampton, it subsequently extended the service to Manchester later that month and Reading in November, while March this year saw customers in Birmingham and Coventry gain access to gigabit speeds. In the wake of the latest coverage expansion – which Virgin said had made its 1Gbps-capable plans available to more than 600,000 additional premises – the cableco noted that 2.7 million homes and businesses in total now have access to what it refers to as ‘future-proof connectivity’. Meanwhile, with regards to future deployment plans, Virgin has said it will announce the next cities to benefit from its Gig1 service ‘later in the year’ as it continues its national gigabit rollout plan.
