MTN South Africa has announced plans to launch its 5G services ‘in several big cities’ on 30 June.
MTN will use the emergency spectrum allocated by the government in April 2020; MTN obtained 40MHz in the 700MHz/800MHz bands, 50MHz in the 2600MHz band and 50MHz in the 3500MHz band.
As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, in November 2019 MTN South Africa selected Ericsson to supply it with 5G products and solutions from its Radio Access Network (RAN), Transport and Core portfolios. Giovanni Chiarelli, Chief Technology and Information Officer at MTN South Africa, commented at the time: ‘South Africa is undergoing a huge digital transformation, which will open up new business opportunities and boost the nation’s economy. To enable and speed up this process, MTN, with Ericsson as our partner, is rapidly upgrading our network to deliver the quality, capacity, and overall network performance that our enterprise and customers demand. Launching 5G will accomplish this transformation and, with fixed wireless access, will ensure high quality, increased capacity, and greater reliability for our customers.’
