IPTV drives Spanish pay-TV market

Spain ended 2019 with 7.2 million pay-TV subscribers, with IPTV, offered through fibre and xDSL network, accounting for 4.7 million of the total.

According to data published by the regulator CNMC, the number of cable subscribers stood at 1.3 million, while those receiving DTH services continued to fall and amounted to 554,000.

The pay-TV total at the end of 2019 was 6.4% more than a year earlier and 88% of subscribers had the service contracted in a packaged way. While traditional TV revenues amounted to €521 million in Q4 2019, or 0.1% less than in the same period a year earlier, those for pay-TV revenues grew by 2% to €564.6 million.

IPTV and OTT revenues grew, and those for DTH and cable fell. Private TV stations, dominated by Mediaset and Atresmedia, accounted for 87.6% (€475.4 million) of total TV ad spend in Q4 2019, compared to 5.7% for public TV (€31.1 million) and 6.7% (€36.6 million) for pay-TV, though the latter figure continued to grow.
