FTTH and pay-TV growth continues in Spain

The number of FTTH connections in Spain grew by 1.6 million in 2019 to reach 10.3 million.

According to the regulator CNMC, the Q4 statistics it has published including these provide a snapshot of the market prior to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. It adds that the total new generation installed accesses continued to grow in the quarter to reach 62 million, or 10.8% more than a year earlier.

However, the only actual growth was seen in FTTH, up from 45 million to 51 million in the year to December 31, 2019.

All told, there were 12.8 million active NGA connections, of 11% more than a year earlier. There were 15.3 million fixed broadband connections, or 82% of which had a contracted speed of 30Mbps or more.

This was 1.4 million higher than in December 2018. Meanwhile, the total number of quadruple and quintuple packages stood at 12.5 million at the end of Q4, with convergent packages representing 80% of the market.

At the same time, the number of pay-TV subscribers grew by 6.4% in 2019 to 7.2 million.

Telco revenues in Q4 amounted to €6,394 million, down 0.3% on the previous year.

Both mobile broadband and audiovisual services grew, offsetting declines in other services.
