Disney+ reaches 50million subscribers

The streaming service Disney+ now has 50 million paid subscribers. Of these, around 8 million are in India, where it launched on the existing Hopstar service last week.

Disney+ made its debut in the US five months ago and is now available in more than a dozen countries around the world. It was launched in eight Western European markets – UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria and Switzerland – in the two weeks.

Commenting on the latest milestone, Kevin Mayer, chairman of Walt Disney Direct-to-Consumer & International, said: “We’re truly humbled that Disney+ is resonating with millions around the globe, and believe this bodes well for our continued expansion throughout Western Europe and into Japan and all of Latin America later this year.
“Great storytelling inspires and uplifts, and we are in the fortunate position of being able to deliver a vast array of great entertainment rooted in joy and optimism on Disney+”.

Disney+ made its debut in the US, Canada and the Netherlands on November 12 and within a couple of days achieved 10 million sign-ups. A week later it launched in Australia, New Zealand and Puerto Rico.

Prior to its launch, Disney said it expected the new service to reach between 60-90 million subscribers by 2024. Given its strong start, this total is likely be reached much sooner.
