As UAE residents scramble to keep in touch with loved ones overseas amid the coronavirus pandemic, Du has introduced a new calling app to help people stay connected.
The service, Voico UAE, allows users to make free video and voice calls and send messages to others anywhere in the world, as long as they are a fellow Voico user.
The service is available for free download from the Apple iTunes Store or Google Play Store, and will be free to use for two months – from March 19 until Wednesday, May 20. All you need is a working UAE mobile phone number to register, and Wi-Fi or mobile data to make calls.
The introduction of the new service comes as rumours fly that WhatsApp has enabled its voice calls for Du users.
People queried their newfound ability to make WhatsApp calls between Du users, or for those on the same Wi-Fi connection, on social media on Sunday. However, Du told The National there had been "no changes to WhatsApp calls" from them.
Voico joins HouseParty and Zoom as helpful tools to stay connected that have seen a surge in popularity since the pandemic broke out and people have been forced to work remotely.
Zoom bills itself as a "remote conferencing services" platform, which allows users to connect via audio or video call directly, or dial into larger video conferences.
Houseparty is an app that allows users to chat via video link and hold a virtual games night with your friends.
