Google announces Anthos for Telecom and 5G cloud Strategy

Google has announced Anthos for Telecom, bringing the Anthos cloud application platform to the network edge.

Launched last year, the platform allows IT shops to manage containerised applications seamlessly between their own infrastructure and multiple clouds, whether that’s AWS, Azure or Google Cloud.

Anthos has a layer of Open APIs which enable cloud configuration changes across all systems and is based on Google Kubernetes Engine.

This way the power of a Kubernetes cloud stack is combined with the flexibility, security and regulatory benefits of hybrid and multi-cloud deployments.

The idea Anthos for Telecom is to allow telecommunications companies to run network-centric applications wherever they need to, much like Android provides an open platform for mobile-centric applications.

Edge computing brings many benefits, including reduced data costs, security and lower latency. The new Anthos platform will essentially enable telecom companies to leverage all of those benefits on top of the flexibility and control afforded by the core Anthos platform.

Speaking to Silicon Angle, Eyal Manor, VP of engineering at Google Cloud, said Anthos’ new capabilities will enable telcos to make “significant advancements” in applications relating to navigation, augmented and virtual reality, and gaming.

Google also announced a new “Global Mobile Edge Cloud” strategy to help telcos digitally transform and encourage them to migrate central IT systems to Google Cloud Platform.

As part of the strategy, Google has partnered with AT&T to help its customers leverage Google cloud services using AT&T’s high-performing edge connectivity. 5G-powered edge applications the companies are testing include AI, machine learning and Kubernetes for retail, manufacturing and transportation verticals.

“Service providers worldwide are embarking on transformation journeys centered on the cloud in order to drive new services, revenue opportunities and experiences,” said Gary Miles, chief marketing officer at Amdocs.

“By combining our cloud-native, open and modular solutions with the fully managed, high performing Google Cloud, we can accelerate this journey,” he added.
