Gigabit speeds driving upgrades in Mexico and Serbia

Mexican cable operator Megacable is deploying fiber GPON infrastructure across its footprint via a US$400 million investment.

The group’s CEO Enrique Yamuni Robles told local news outlet El Universal that the firm expects the overlay to be ready within two years. The announcement is somewhat unexpected given that in January this year, Megacable unveiled plans to migrate its cables to the DOCSIS 3.1 platform to enable Gigabit download speeds.

Across continents, another provider chasing the same speed offering is Serbia Broadband (SBB), which – much like Megacable – is its market’s second-largest ISP based on subscribers. It has now made the city of Nis into its sixth ‘Giga City’ after launching 1Gbps broadband plans for residents.

Nis joins Belgrade, Gornji Milanovac, Novi Sad, Subotica, and most recently Kragujevac, with the move forming part of a planned EUR300 million (USD333 million) infrastructure investment over the next five years.
