ETECSA doubles broadband user base in 2019

Cuba’s state-owned telecoms operator Empresa de Telecomunicaciones de Cuba (ETECSA) signed up more than 143,000 residential fixed broadband subscribers by the end of 2019, more than double the year-end figure of 70,418 for 2018, local news site Granma reports.

ETECSA President Mayra Arevich Marin was cited as saying that the company’s mobile user base had grown to over six million subscribers, 70% of which were smartphone users. Access was mainly through the operator’s 2G and 3G networks, however, the official added. In terms of the company’s plans for 2020, meanwhile, the official noted that the company was looking to add 200,000 new mobile subscribers to its books by the end of the year, alongside 634,000 mobile internet subscribers.

The operator is also planning to expand the capacity and coverage of its 4G network, which went live in October 2019.
