Tele2 Latvia has completed the installation of two 5G base stations, one each in Daugavpils and Jelgava. The operator previously had a single 5G test site at a business centre in Riga and aims to launch commercial services over the nascent system in January 2020. Commenting on the company’s rollout plans for the technology, Tele2 Technical Director Liga Krumi explained: ‘In order to be able to provide our customers with the benefits of 5G technology in the near future, we need to gradually expand this network throughout Latvia, which we are doing. Given the specificity of this technology and the significant investment, the implementation process will go hand in hand with the further development of the 4G network.’
In a related development, the operator expects to complete its project to connect regional mobile base stations to fibre-optic infrastructure ‘in the coming months’. Tele2 is investing EUR1 million (USD1.1 million) on the two-year project, which looks to connect base stations in the largest cities and ‘strategically important centres of Latvia’ to fibre-optic networks.
