RTVE considers streaming plan

The Spanish public broadcaster RTVE is looking into the possibility of changing its proprietary channel Teledeporte into a streaming service.

According to El Confidential, this is the third time in five years such as scenario has been considered by RTVE’s executives.

The new management is using the same arguments as have been voiced previously, namely Teledeporte’s low audience share and the €20 million that RTVE would save by making such a change.

Back in 2014, it was proposed merging the DTT-delivered Teledeporte with La 2 and to offer Teledeporte as an internet-only service.

At that time, RTVE was seeking to make a saving of €16 million.

El Confidential notes that national broadcasters pay the transmission company Abertis around €5 million for broadcasting each TV channels they operate.

RTVE currently has five, namely La 1, La 2, Clan, Teledeporte and 24 Horas
