Belgium’s port of Zeebrugge has announced that it will deploy a private 5G network by the end of the year in collaboration with Citymesh, which is the only operator in Belgium with a 5G spectrum licence.
The network will initially be used to link tugs, cameras and sensors, as well as provide reliable connectivity for a new sea sluice. Citymesh acquired a ten-year licence for spectrum in the 3.5GHz band in 2015, enabling it to deploy local 5G networks despite Belgium’s plans to auction 5G-suitable frequencies having stalled due to political wrangling.
