US-based satellite network operator Hughes Network Systems has announced that its new Mexican broadband unit, HNS de Mexico (trading as HughesNet), will go live on 1 October. The introduction of HughesNet marks the expansion of Hughes’ presence in Mexico, where the company offers commercial enterprise and government services, through its partner Star Group/StarGo. The new unit will offer down/uplink speeds of 25Mbps/3Mbps to approximately 95% of the population, delivering coverage to many underserved rural areas.
TeleGeography notes that – Mexico aside – HughesNet is available in the US, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. HughesNet accounted for a total of 1.415 million broadband subscribers as of 30 June 2019, of which 169,000 were based in Latin America.
