XL improves 3G, 4G services at Lake Toba, North Sumatra

As part of its ongoing network upgrade programme, Indonesia’s XL Axiata says it has improved its 3G and 4G network in the Lake Toba Region, North Sumatra. The move is designed in part to support the wider tourism initiative being put in place by the government which seeks to make the area a world-class tourist destination. Currently, XL Axiata has deployed approximately 550 3G and 4G base transceiver stations (BTS) out of a total 750 BTS in the region, to serve the area around what is Indonesia’s largest lake, IndoTelko reports. In addition, the cellco has installed 40 3G/4G BTS around Silangit Airport – the main air transit route to get to Lake Toba – and upgraded the 90km Medan to Lake Toba road link to provide high quality data connections.

Commenting, Group Head of XL Axiata West Region, Francky Rinaldo Pakpahan, said: ‘We welcome the government’s efforts in developing Lake Toba as a reliable tourist destination in the future. Therefore, with enthusiasm, we accompanied it by strengthening the quality data network [in the region of] Lake Toba, including Samosir Island, also along the route to get there. Not to be left behind, we are also strengthening the network at Silangit Airport and also along the land route from Medan to Lake Toba.’
