Globe expands GoWifi rollout

Filipino telco Globe Telecom is aiming to improve its wireless networks in Manila as part of a wider drive to deliver a digital transformation in the capital. Under the plan Globe and the City of Manila have signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) for the operator to ramp up its deployment of its GoWifi network. ‘We need to build additional 100 wireless sites to improve the signal in Manila,’ Globe president and CEO Ernest Cu confirmed, with the firm noting it is making the technology available at the following locations: Manila City Hall, Ospital ng Maynila, Tondo Medical Center, Gat Andres Bonifacio Memorial Medical Center, Tondo National High School, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila and Universidad de Manila.

Globe Telecom’s Wi-Fi network provides customers with internet access at speeds of up to 100Mbps. As at 30 June 2019 it had rolled out a total of 2,500 GoWifi hotspot sites across the country, up from 2,000 a year earlier, and aims to double that again to 5,000 by 2020 with a focus on high-traffic areas such as shopping malls, hospitals, and schools/colleges. It is understood the MoA with the city authorities also encompasses the rollout of GCash – which already has 20 million registered users in the Philippines – as the primary financial payment platform.
