Sparkle, the international services arm of the Telecom Italia Group, has announced the availability of an integrated platform for network automation, programmability and virtualisation called Genome. The platform is intended to progressively evolve Sparkle’s traditional Physical Network Functions (PNF) into cloud-native Virtual Network Functions (VNF). It features an automation workflow manager as well as a planning tool for abstraction and modelling of the IP/MPLS network, allowing engineers to simulate availability and failover scenarios, automate traffic balancing and build comprehensive forecast needs based on traffic trends, regional growth and other inputs, said Sparkle.
'Genome.SDN', to give the platform its full title, will progressively be extended to all Sparkle network domains, starting with the integration of the Nibble optical transport network in early 2020. It’s already being deployed at Sparkle’s core data centres in Catania (Italy) and Athens (Greece), as well as in Miami (Florida) and Secaucus (New Jersey), with Milan (Italy) to follow later this year.
