ProSiebenSat.1 considers international expansion of Joyn

German media company ProSiebenSat.1 is exploring the possibility of rolling out its streaming service Joyn, operated in conjunction with Discovery, to other countries.

“If Joyn runs with all the important features and the future premium offering, we will see how we can transfer the model into a broader European context,” ProSiebenSat.1 CEO Max Conze told German business magazine Wirtschaftswoche. “There are various ideas for this: We could grant licences. Or we could launch national versions of Joyn in other countries together with partners.” Conze did not provide further details, though.

Joyn launched on June 18, 2019. The platform initially comprises 55 free-to-air TV channels, offered as free live-streams, including all channels of ProSiebenSat.1 and Discovery as well as the channels of public broadcasters ARD and ZDF as well as commercial broadcasters such as Viacom, WELT and Sport1.

Joyn also comprises a video-on-demand service with series, shows and ahead-of-TV premiers. Many programmes are also available on demand in the catch-up service for 30 days after being broadcast. There are also curated theme channels. The first are offers from Food Network and MotorTrend, further channels are to follow.

Joyn is available as an app for smartphones and tablets (iOS/Android), Amazon Fire TV, Smart TVs (Android TV), via Apple AirPlay and on the web at www.joyn.de – without prior registration.

In winter 2019, the second expansion phase is planned, with subscription services to be added to Joyn, for example maxdome and Eurosport Player.
