Ukrainian government clears local telephony services using mobile networks

The Ukrainian government has approved a proposal from regulator NKRZI to clear local telephony services on mobile networks, reports BizLigaNet. The decision has enabled national operator Ukrtelecom to provide local telephony services on the networks of mobile operators Trimob and Vodafone Ukraine.

Ukrtelecom‘s local telephony subscriber base totals 3.6 million. The operator faces permanent problems due to the thefts of copper cable lines. About 22,000 cases of thefts were registered in 2018.

Ukrtelecom earlier launched a pilot project on the issue, providing local telephony services on wireless networks for over 1,600 subscribers in almost 250 settlements. The decision by the regulator is expected to grow the company's user base.

The operator currently provides rental services for users of mobile phones for UAH 1 per month. The telephones include Sims from Trimob and use national roamong on the network of Vodafone Ukraine.
