Amazon plans to launch thousands of internet satellites

The Washington based company officially confirmed that Kuiper Systems is a project the company is recently working on, to provide internet services across the globe. The project focusses on catering a strong network to the underserved and unserved areas all around the world by launching thousands of satellites into the Earth’s orbit. Unlike the conventional satellites these will be cost effective with lower latencies.

Kuiper Systems Project involves satellites on three various altitudes of the Earth’s low orbit: 1,156 satellites at 391 miles, 1,296 satellites at 379 miles and 784 satellites at 367 miles. The satellites are marked in a manner that caters internet services to 95 percent of the population across the globe with offering services in areas ranging from fifty six degrees north to fifty six degrees south. This long term initiative envisages catering the needs of millions of people who lack basic network services. Furthermore, the American technology company is seeking to join hands with firms that share the same goals. However, the Amazon has yet not declared whether it will be manufacturing its own satellites or will be purchasing technology from outside sources. The company also has to decide how to launch millions of satellites in the lower orbit.

Even though Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Amazon confirmed to have his own company named Blue Origin which deals with providing spaceflight services and manufactures aircrafts, Amazon still will have a glimpse of all the available options. The Kuiper Project also involve Earth stations for communication purposes. The purpose is yet to receive permission form Federal Communications Commission to start the process. Apart from amazon, SpaceX is planning to launch twelve thousand satellites, OneWeb seeks to launch 650 satellites whereas Facebook is in the process of developing its own internet catering satellite.
