KPN to start first GPON tests in August

KPN has named Yerseke as the first area where it will deploy GPON technology on its FTTH network. Wholesale customers will be able to access the first WBA/VULA connections there from 29 August. The Zeeland area will see the Dutch operator try out the technique in preparation for a broader deployment in new FTTH areas, likely from Q4, the company announced on its wholesale portal.

KPN announced in May that it planned to start GPON tests in Q3. In its current network configuration it uses Ethernet over Fiber (EoF) and Gigabit over Fiber (GoF), making GPON its third access system.

The new configuration will require a new type of optical network terminal. As this is an important part of the network which requires authentication and activation, KPN has decided to make the ONT part of its wholesale service. KPN has asked wholesale customers to cooperate in order to ensure the equipment can be placed with just one technician visit.
