Bolivia looking to offer satellite capacity to Paraguay

Bolivia is finalising a deal to offer neighbouring Paraguay capacity on its Tupac Katari satellite, reports Prensa Latina, citing Bolivian minister of public works Oscar Coca. The aim is to help the Paraguayan authorities to bridge the digital divide in the country by making available a free band on the satellite previously reserved for the armed forces. Coca said he will be meeting with his Paraguayan counterparts in the coming weeks to discuss the possibility and that a connection to the new Pacific fibre link of state-owned operator Entel is also on the cards.

The Tupac Katari satellite has raised over USD 100 million in revenues since launching in December 2013, with the country’s space agency (ABE) also planning to launch a second communications satellite –Tupac Katari II– in 2021.
