O2 is bringing its 5G network to key locations in the UK ahead of its official launch

In anticipation of the rollout of its 5G network later this year, O2 has teamed up with the Wireless Infrastructure Group (WIG) to bring 5G to a number of public places like Liverpool's Anfield Stadium.

"While we look ahead to 5G we also continue to focus on our existing network capability," says O2 chief technology officer, Brendan O’Reilly, via Trusted Reviews. "We strive to deliver a great network experience to all our customers, including some of the UK’s busiest locations where network demand is at its peak."

Additional locations that will be bolstered by 5G include Lord’s cricket ground, the ExCel London convention centre, and a number of shopping centres and hotels across the city.

O2's "four corners of the UK" 5G plan involves getting 5G up and running in London, Belfast, Cardiff, and Edinburgh. While O2's 5G roll-out is slated for 2019, other UK networks will be following suit in 2020.

Only a handful of 5G phones have been announced so far, so unless you're planning to jump on the bandwagon sooner rather than later, waiting around until next year when more handsets and networks will become available is probably what most people will be doing.

OnePlus will be joining the fray tomorrow with the launch of its 7 series that includes the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G. The company is giving thirsty consumers the chance to pick up the phone early at pop-ups the world over on May 17, with the sole UK location being John Lewis on Oxford Street in London. Doors open at 12pm.
