Romanian government plans to launch 5G auction in autumn

The Romanian government plans to launch the auction for 5G licenses in autumn, despite higher taxes impose this year to telecom operators, according to telecom regulator (ANCOM) president Sorin Grindeanu, cited by Mediafax.

According to ANCOM head, the implementation of 5G technologies in Romania will not only benefit communications but many other sectors, from the service sector, to finance, agriculture and transport.

“All this, combined, 5G with the Internet of Things, will lead to a new industrial revolution. Implementing 5G on all market studies will lead to the creation of around 250,000 jobs. We are talking about intelligent industries that will grow as turnover, now they are around EUR 3.7 billion in Romania and will go up to 9 EUR bn,” said Grindeanu.

„There are investments that will be made for the implementation of 5G on private studies, somewhere until 2023-2024, around EUR 9 billion, of which EUR 1.5-1.6 billion in the field of communications. The difference is in all the other industries we mentioned earlier because all these things connected, beyond technology, to the Internet of things will lead to a new industrial revolution,” he added.

In December 2018, the Romanian government introduced new fiscal regulation and taxes for banking, telecom, energy and the private pensions sector through OUG 114, which caused backlash from players in these markets and led to the decision that the government would pass another OUG to amend some of the most controversial provisions.

For the telecom groups, the special tax of 3 percent of annual turnover was maintained and some players in the market suggested that 5G investments could be postponed.
