FCC announces new plan to take on robocalls, spoof numbers

New enforcement against robocalls have been outlined in a report released by the Federal Communications Commission.

They include more and larger fines for companies who spoof phone numbers. Companies use those fake numbers to trick people into thinking a phone call is local.

The FCC is also promising relief for the caller ID authentication. Phone carriers can use the software to screen calls and detect robocalls before they make it to you.

FCC Chairman, Ajit Pai, says if it appears major carriers won’t meet the deadline to get the technology done this year, his agency will consider regulatory intervention. The FCC says it has already tried everything, including hefty fines.

Last year, up to $200,000,000 was levied in fines.
