Telekom lifts LTE coverage to 97.6 percent

Telekom Deutschland (TD), the domestic operating unit of Deutsche Telekom (DT), installed 430 new mobile sites in the final quarter of 2018, enabling over 160,000 additional customers to access the firm’s LTE network. As such, Telekom’s 4G service is now available to 97.6% of the population, with this set to increase to 98% by the end of this year.

In other news, Telefonica Deutschland has successfully commissioned a dual-band 5G radio link connecting an eNodeB site to the core network over a distance of more than 5km. In order to achieve the high transmission rate of 16Gbps, Telefonica Deutschland uses two different radio frequencies in parallel, 18GHz and 80GHz, which are aggregated to a link. ‘Our 5G-ready radio equipment installed in Munich enables the high-capacity connection of future mobile radio sites both in remote areas as well as in cases where a fibre-optic installation is not economically feasible or simply impossible. Thus, this radio-based technology is a very good alternative, especially with regard to 5G,’ commented Dr. Anja Hoehn, director of the 5G TechCity project at Telefonica Deutschland.
