The Philippines' PLDT, via wireless subsidiary Smart, has entered a collaboration with Google to extend free Wi-Fi services to the Philippines.
Under the collaboration, more Filipinos will be given access to Wi-Fi connectivity via Smart Wi-Fi hubs across the country.
The partnership is aimed at increasing the country's internet penetration – presently only around 63% of Filipinos have access to the internet – and ultimately improve the Philippines' economy.
PLDT and Google signed an agreement in October last year to collaborate to improve broadband and Wi-Fi access in the Philippines.
Under the agreement, PLDT is offering Google Wi-Fi services to customers, with unlimited 50Mbps plans costing around $70 per month.
"It is an honor for us to join hands with an esteemed technology leader who shares in our vision of empowering our citizens with connectivity,” commented Jovy Hernandez, SVP and head of PLDT and Smart Enterprise Business Groups.
“More than being a testament to our technological adeptness, this milestone signifies our unwavering commitment to prompt the next chapter of digital transformation for the country.”
