Singapore start-up TPG to offer free mobile service in year-long trial

At the end of last month, Singapore’s new fourth telco TPG Telecom announced plans to start offering free mobile service for a year for the first 20,000 people who register their interest in the company.

In the newcomer’s first public announcement since news broke in August 2018 that it would spin off from its Australian parent – and just days before the regulator-imposed deadline to reach 95% outdoor mobile coverage by the year end – TPGconfirmed that its new SIM-only plan will include unlimited data and unlimited mobile-to-mobile calls. It notes, however, that in terms of 4G, data speeds will only be unlimited for the first 2GB of daily downloads, after which speeds will be capped at 1Mbps for the remainder of the day. There will also be 20 local SMS messages and 20 minutes of outgoing calls to local fixed lines each month, it says, although mobile calls require the user to own a VoLTE-capable handset that is compatible with its mobile network. The trial plan will come with no contract and customers will be notified of any standard monthly charge at least two months before the end of the year-long trial period, it confirmed. Successful applicants to this trial service will be given a newly allocated number, while MNP is currently being certified and will be made available after the trial.
