DIGI plans fiber rollout in Madrid

Romanian-owned MVNO DIGI Mobil is planning to roll out its own fiber network in parts of Madrid, having entered the fixed broadband market earlier this year via an agreement with Telefonica Espana (Movistar), El Espanol writes, citing unnamed sources.

According to the paper, DIGI has commissioned a vendor to prepare for the network deployment, which will begin in early 2019. The operator is planning to focus its fibre rollout on those areas of the capital with a high proportion of immigrant residents, as the company primarily markets its services to the Romanian diaspora in Spain. As such, the following districts would be the first to be covered: Fuencarral-El Pardo, Latina, Carabanchel, Villaverde, Puente and Villa de Vallecas, Vicalvaro, Moratalaz, Ciudad Lineal, San Blas and Barajas. Under the plans, DIGI would continue to partner with Movistar alongside using its own infrastructure.
